The PhD in Informatics is by research where the student, under the supervision of senior faculty, will undertake independent research contributing towards the science of information, the practice of information processing, and the engineering of information systems. The student is required to complete a thesis research which must constitute a significant original contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the chosen topic. The research can be in a specialized area or across disciplines. Research of inter-disciplinary nature is especially encouraged.

The PhD in Informatics is by research where the candidate, under the supervision of senior faculty, will undertake independent research contributing towards the science of information, the practice of information processing, and the engineering of information systems. The candidate is required to complete a thesis research which must constitute a significant original contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the chosen topic. The research can be in a specialized topic (e.g., Data science, AI, IoT, cybersecurity, cloud computing, blockchain, augmented reality) or across disciplines (e.g., IT in health, finance, retail, education, supply chain). Research of inter-disciplinary nature is especially encouraged. Malaysia University of Science and Technology is IoT & IPv6 Centre of Excellence approved by ITU.

Upon successful completion, the PhD holders can take pride in being able to:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the chosen topic and mastery of skills and research methods related to the field of IT/informatics.
  • Contribute to original research that broadens the boundary of knowledge through an in-depth thesis, which has been defended and presented and according to international standards, including publishing in international journals and conference proceedings.

Adminision Requirements
  • A recognized Master degree in a related field with minimum CGPA of 2.75 (on a 4-point scale); or
  • A recognized Master degree in a related field with CGPA above 2.5 will be considered if the candidate has minimum of 5 years of working experience; or
  • Any other equivalent qualification deemed acceptable by MQA.
English Requirements:
  • Applicants must provide documentary evidence of proficiency in English in one of the following examinations:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 600 or higher, or
  • International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 or higher, or
  • The Malaysian University English Test (MUET) with Band 4 or higher.
