The Masters of Science in Energy and Environment is a
new degree programme offered by the Malaysia University
of Science and Technology (MUST). Through coursework and
research, students focus on the critical intersection
between current and future energy technologies and their
impact on the environment. The programme provides a
foundational understanding of the science and
engineering behind energy conversion, delivery, and use; as well as
an understanding of the physical processes that govern
the transport and eventual fate of pollution in our
environment. Students also learn quantitative analytical
tools which can inform and greatly improve policy and
planning decisions involving energy and the environment.
The MSc is designed for students with a strong
quantitative background and an accredited bachelor’s
degree in engineering, applied sciences, mathematics or
economics. The degree requires a minimum of 18 months to
complete and involves coursework, research, and a final
thesis. The thesis allows students to develop expertise
in an area closely related to their particular interests.
The programme courses offered in the 2004/2005 academic
year include:
- Fundamentals of Advanced Energy Conversion
- Sustainable Energy
- Environmental Policy and Economics
- Chemicals in the Environment: Fate and Transport
- Biomass Processing for Energy Conversion
- Electricity and Natural Gas: Issues in Regulation
and Economics
Graduates from this programme at MUST will be
well-suited to accelerate to the forefront of their
field. They will have a fundamental understanding of
energy technologies, skills in quantitative economic
analysis, and analytical tools for decision making and
policy evaluation. With the current scarcity of energy
and environmental specialists in Malaysia, a wide range
of opportunities exist. Graduates will be well-qualified
for positions in academia, the private sector, or public
agencies dealing with technology development, strategic
planning, and energy/environmental policy.
The programme requires a minimum 18 months of full
time study .
