MTL 712 Land Use and Urban Transportation Planning

This course introduces concepts, planning processes and skills to solve urban transportation problems. It sketches the overall transportation planning process, together with its analytical framework. It discusses Malaysian and US federal programs and legislation that direct the uses of planning. Special attention is given to approaches in traffic management, demand management and the relation of transportation planning to the management of urban growth. Applications in this course will emphasize the current concern for congestion management. We will introduce a wide variety of tools, such as staggering work hours, ride sharing, high occupancy vehicle lanes, smart vehicle systems, the management of urban land development, and congestion pricing, all in the context of the multiple objectives and planning controversies that characterize this problem.
