MTL508 Advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems

Instructor: Leong Siew Mun

This course on 'Advanced Intelligent Transport Systems' is the continuation of the 'Introduction to Intelligent Transport System' with the focus on developing a hands-on experience based on the knowledge acquired in the earlier course. All students interested to take up this course should have completed the 'Introduction to Intelligent Transport System'.

This course will be of interest to students interested in taking up a particular topic in this course to be the dissertation subject. Students are expected to play a major role in demonstrating their understanding and how the application of ITS knowledge can be adopted in improving transportation system efficiency.

The course will introduce a new approach in transportation planning process incorporating the ITS technologies as alternative solutions for a sustainable transportation system development, discuss the various technologies involved in selected key ITS applications relevant to the context of Malaysia's needs, and deliberate other strategic issues related to ITS deployment. The main topics in this course are as follows:

  • Strategic Planning and Management of ITS Deployments
  • Traffic Simulation and Modeling of Traffic Network
  • Urban Traffic Control Systems
  • Selected ITS Applications in Malaysia such as Electronic Toll Collection System, Automatic Vehicle Location Systems (Probe Vehicles), Incident Detection System, Electronic Ticketing System for Public Transport, Traffic Information Dissemination System and etc.
  • Financing ITS Deployments
  • Application of ITS System Architecture
  • Evaluation of ITS deployments
