The Business of Biology

Instructor: Dr Jennifer Ann Harikrishna, Dr Lim Saw Hoon

At the end of the semester the students will have an understanding of the importance of the regulatory and business landscape for commercial biotechnology research, development and industrial production. The aims of the course are to develop an understanding of the technical, financial, regulatory and other factors that impact at each step of a biotechnology product's development from lab to marketplace, using case studies and course work based on both local and international biotechnology businesses.

Topics to be covered include the history of the emergence of the life science industry, key technologies of the industry, business management, intellectual property rights, legislative issues such as biosafety, funding and commercialization case studies, future prospects of biotechnology applications.
